“Are you saying I told Laila that?”

Laila made a bewildered expression and looked up at Marnak this time. He seemed to flinch slightly, but she didn’t care.

“Didn’t you hear? Eustar told me that himself! He said it wasn’t a good idea! Didn’t you hear?”

Marnak could only look back and forth between the two of them like a helpless, confused puppy, offering no reply.

Laila was nearly driven mad! Lately, she’d often wondered if something was wrong with her head—ever since meeting Eustar—but today, she truly felt as though she’d been possessed by a ghost.

Eustar gently grasped Laila’s shoulders and looked straight into her eyes.

“Laila, are you absolutely certain it was my voice?”

“Yes, I am! It was your voice—so unmistakably yours that I could never confuse it with anyone else’s.”

Eustar opened his mouth to say something, then changed his mind. Right now, it was impossible to make Laila understand everything. Perhaps someday she might, but honestly, even if that day came, he’d rather avoid explaining it altogether.

“First, calm down, Laila. It might just be an aftereffect of portal sickness. Sometimes… well, it happens. Some people see hallucinations or hear voices that aren’t there. Right, Marnak?”

Marnak was flustered. People sometimes vomited, felt dizzy, or even fainted from motion sickness, but he’d never encountered anyone complaining of hallucinations or auditory delusions before.

Yet, seeing Eustar’s expression, it was clearly not the time to say ‘no.’

“Y-yes, that’s right. Occasionally, such people do exist.”

“Really?”

At Laila’s question, Marnak quickly nodded and hurriedly turned away, pretending to inspect the man in the room. He then clasped his hands over his chest and offered a brief prayer of penance.
