Od suddenly turned to look at Baso and burst into laughter. Though Chief Steward Baso never left his side—not even for a single minute each day—it felt as if he were seeing Od laugh like this for the first time in nearly a century.

“Judging by the fact you came through the main gate, you must have something urgent to say. Am I right?”

Baso gave a slight nod of his chin and smiled. It was alright… Today, Od was in exceptionally good spirits. To Baso, nothing mattered more than that.

“You may go now, Baso.”

The chief steward bowed politely. He then bowed in the same manner to Eustar, who had just entered, before vanishing behind the heavy door as it closed silently.

“What brings you here?”

Od spoke. Seeing his elder brother sitting on the bed bathed in sunlight, Eustar’s face bloomed with a wide smile.

Though Od’s sunlit skin appeared corpse-pale, Eustar even entertained the absurd notion that if Od soaked up just a day or two more of sunlight, his illness might miraculously vanish altogether.

“It’s been a long time since you last walked through that door.”

Od’s expression softened warmly as he looked at his smiling younger brother. Eustar gave a gentle smile in return, glanced once at the door he’d entered through, then pulled a chair to sit beside him.

“I’m glad to see you looking so at ease today, Brother.”

“My head hurts less since I don’t have to hear Sui clattering about.”

For a fleeting moment, Od’s expression looked strikingly like that of a very young boy—despite the persistent pallor and wrinkles etched across his face.

Sui was the name of Marchioness Himiard. Hearing Od’s remark, Eustar let out a brief chuckle.

“Please don’t say such things. She’s the one who cares most deeply for the kingdom’s well-being.”
