When Laila opened her eyes, it was already bright outside. She sat up groggily, then yanked the sheet toward herself in surprise as Marchioness Himiard suddenly slipped past the curtain in front of the bed. Her cheeks flushed from the reflexive action.

“Did you sleep well?”

The marchioness asked without the slightest concern for Laila’s flustered state. Laila felt something odd about the question—it seemed less like a simple inquiry about her well-being and more like a knowing confirmation that she hadn’t slept properly at all.

If that truly was the marchioness’s intention, then she was right. Laila hadn’t slept a wink all night. Though she’d tried her best to close her eyes and clear her mind, the fading image of Eustar’s grandmother kept resurfacing.

She vividly recalled how the shrieks and malice had torn through the air with such sharpness. The strange, tiny, grating sounds she couldn’t identify had also persisted without end.

“To be honest, I barely slept.”

Laila answered truthfully. At that, the marchioness gave a small knowing chuckle and signaled her servants with a gesture. One of them was Mel, and the others were unfamiliar faces she hadn’t seen the day before.

“You’ll feel better after a warm meal. Wash up, get dressed, and then eat. Afterward, you’re to be taken to someone.”

Laila asked in return,

“To whom? Where am I being taken?”

The marchioness blinked as if surprised Laila didn’t already know.

“His Highness the Crown Prince said you’re to have an audience with His Majesty. Didn’t you know?”

Only then did Laila let out a soft “Ah.”

“No, I did know.”

“Good. Even if lack of sleep has ruined your appetite, you must eat well. Meeting His Majesty won’t be an easy task.”
