The Marchioness Himiard’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Rigicus? That’s a place name I’ve never heard before. Is it an interesting place?”

Laila knew that the woman had no interest in this topic whatsoever, but she decided to feign ignorance and continue the conversation politely.

“As I just mentioned, Rigicus is a very small village—probably not even marked on any map. People work hard there all year round. Those who are slightly better off tend sheep, though there aren’t many of them.”

The marchioness made a soft “Hmm” sound.

“Did you raise sheep too, Miss Laila? I’ve always wanted to try herding.”

Eustar chimed in playfully.

“Herding? I never knew you harbored such dreams, Himiard.”

The Marchioness Himiard replied,

“Widows are naturally full of dreams, Your Highness.”

Laila couldn’t help but glance quickly at the woman’s face before turning her eyes away again. But the marchioness noticed Laila’s gaze and gave a little smirk—as if someone who delighted in making others flustered with mischievous remarks.

“You seem surprised that I’m a widow.”

It was clear that the Marchioness Himiard possessed a remarkably wide range of expressions. She had been elegant and slightly intimidating upon their first meeting, yet she also seemed to harbor a delicate sensitivity—like a frightened young animal.

That sensitivity seemed to drive her into a cynical attitude, which in turn manifested as the kind of playful teasing that made her difficult to deal with.
