Deceptor twisted his body and let out a strange sound. Like a tree after a great wildfire, blackened ash-like flakes fell from his scorched joints with a soft rustle.

As the heat reached right before her face, Laila felt as if her entire face would burn away. Yet she never flinched or closed her eyes.

Laila spoke.

“If you insist on holding out, I won’t stay idle either, Deceptor.”

Deceptor’s face contorted. He seemed to sneer, yet it was far from resembling a genuine laugh.

“What exactly do you think you can do if you don’t stay idle, you insignificant thing?”

Deceptor spoke in a mocking tone, yet beneath it lurked anxiety and anger.

“You’re neither human nor demon—just some middling witch. Do you really believe that because your eyes are slightly keen, you can do anything to me? That’s a grave mistake.”

Laila’s lips moved slowly.

“You’ve underestimated me far too much. Did you truly think I wouldn’t know who you deceived?”

Deceptor’s face began to twist—horribly, grotesquely. He stepped even closer to Laila. Yet now, she no longer felt even the heat radiating from his body.

Laila twisted her lips and said,

“Well, I suppose that’s your nature—you can’t help it. Lying, hiding, looking down on others, acting arrogantly. It’s simply your disposition, so what can be done? Let me be perfectly clear: I know exactly who you deceived, and I’ve already told him that you were the one fooled. I could summon him right now and plunge you into suffering beyond anything you’ve imagined in all your years of existence. Do you understand?”

“You insolent wench…”

Deceptor’s fingers bent with a sharp crackle. Watching the ashes drip from him, Laila coldly drove in the final nail.
