A searing pain, as if burned, swept across Jimius’s palm. Suddenly, she recalled a memory from her childhood.

She had once seen one of the maids extinguish candles by pinching them out with her fingers. Having forgotten the snuffer and too lazy to go back for it, the maid had quickly pinched out each candle one by one, glancing nervously over her shoulder as she did.

For some reason, it had looked incredibly cool. One day, Jimius brought her finger close to a lit candle and, just like the maid had done, touched the flickering flame.

The flame did not go out. She only felt a sharp pain so intense it made her scream in shock. In her panic, she knocked over the candelabrum, spilling candles onto the carpet and nearly starting a fire.

Amid that entire chaos, Jimius stared at her scorched finger, feeling her breath shorten from the throbbing pain.

When Deceptor slashed her palm, Jimius remembered that same pain from the first time she had ever reached for fire.

“Jimius!”

As her blood dripped onto the floor, Marnak rushed toward her—or rather, tried to.

But he couldn’t take even a single step beyond where he stood. Deceptor turned toward Marnak, gripping Jimius’s bleeding hand with a fierce expression.

“Don’t recklessly interfere with the contract, you foolish priest.”

His voice no longer carried any trace of Baso.

With her numb hand clutched by Deceptor, Jimius thought of Baso, her once-faithful steward. Had he been a demon from the very beginning? Or had he been sacrificed? If he truly had been a demon all along…

Jimius seized Deceptor’s hand in return.

“Was it you?”

Deceptor’s flame-shaped hair rippled. He grinned, his lips stretching impossibly wide.
