She pulled the sword with all her might, but it wouldn’t budge an inch. It was as if Od’s hand had turned to stone, trapping the blade between his fingers.

Yet blood streamed from Od’s hand, and the blade kept sinking deeper into his leathery skin. Still, Od didn’t utter a single groan—in fact, he even gave a faint smile.

“Speak,”

Od said. His voice settled heavily like the air on a drizzly day, chilling and oppressive.

“Tell me—why am I unworthy to be king?”

Himiard was struck speechless, her pale lips trembling violently. She felt terror cornering her.

Od continued.

“I am the rightful heir of the Hyenmorick royal line, and even while ill, as you yourself said, I strove tirelessly to govern the realm. Isn’t that true, Sui?”

His hand was now nearly severed. Himiard, unable either to pull the sword out or drive it deeper, clutched the hilt before crying out,

“Let go!”

But Od did not release the blade. It was moments away from splitting his palm and fingers in two.

“Let go? Why would you say that? If you truly believe I’m unworthy of kingship, then why hesitate? Kill me with this sword—strike me down like a pig. Go on…”

Himiard felt the sword suddenly shift. The blade, which had been utterly still, now pressed steadily downward toward Od’s chest.

She screamed, letting go of the hilt and stumbling backward. Leaning against the wall, gasping for breath, she watched as Count Tommen and the other nobles swiftly surrounded Od protectively.

“Your Majesty! Good heavens!”
