“Really?”

“I already told you. I can only tell you that after you get to know me a little better.”

He smiled with an easygoing air, but Laila knew that right now, more than ever, an impenetrable, towering wall surrounded him.

It was a wall so solid it seemed impossible to break through with anything—merely looking at it induced resignation…

Laila furrowed her brow and quietly gazed over his shoulder. For a moment, it seemed as if a dark wisp of smoke had darted past, teasing her—but she shook her head and looked again, realizing it had only been her imagination.

Eustar spoke.

“Let’s get some sleep now. We’ve already paid our lodging fee in full.”

“In full?”

Eustar, who had just plopped onto the bed and was preparing to lie down, turned to look at her.

“What’s wrong?”

Laila’s expression was one of genuine disbelief.

“You’re not going to report Madam Nollen to the constabulary?”

Eustar fell silent for a moment, lost in thought.

“I don’t really feel the necessity to do so.”

“But that woman threw the corpse down the well! Like trash! If Madam Nollen had just filed a report, they might have caught the man who killed her—but she didn’t. That woman is why…”

She’s suffering, Laila thought. Some ghosts harm humans out of pure malice, but there are clearly others who don’t.

The pain of life can be escaped through death—but when pain and death become intertwined, they form an inescapable trap, no matter what you do.

—”They say bad people go to hell when they die, Laila. But that isn’t entirely true.”

Laila recalled her mother’s words. Back then, she hadn’t understood them well, but now she grasped their meaning precisely. One could fall into hell without ever committing evil—trapped forever in a liminal state between life and death.

“Madam Nollen is also guilty. She must pay for her sins.”

Eustar turned toward Laila.

“Of course, that’s justice. But there’s no real need to go out of our way for it. Whatever was here is gone now and won’t return. Even if we reported Madam Nollen, do you really think the woman’s body would still be intact? I suspect there’s nothing left but bones by now. With that, we can prove nothing—and finding the man who killed her would be impossible.”

“So you think it’s entirely meaningless, is that it?”

“It’s not… Well, actually, yes. Maybe you’re right. Yes, Laila. In my opinion, it’s a meaningless endeavor—a matter we need not involve ourselves in.”

Laila spoke.

“Not everything important is only for the living. Sometimes… sometimes, I believe we must act justly for the dead as well. That’s what I think.”

“Even though the dead won’t thank you for it?”

“Yes—even so.”

A tense silence filled the dim room. Laila wondered: if this quiet kept swelling until it burst, what would happen?

Would the entire inn shatter? Would the worn wooden floorboards, the moldy rafters, and the grimy, fogged-up mirror all shatter and scatter?

When she was young, something like that had happened. Laila briefly drifted into old memories before quickly snapping back to the present. Eustar was still staring at her intently.

He looked puzzled—but with a faint hint of curiosity. Perhaps he’d never heard words like that in his life before? It seemed absurd, yet to Laila, it rang with piercing clarity.

“I don’t want to be at odds with you, Laila.”

Laila blinked silently.

Even in that brief moment, Eustar never took his eyes off her—as if by watching her long enough, she might suddenly change her mind…

No, Laila thought. Not this time.

‘I don’t want to defy him.’

Another voice rang out in her mind—hers, yet not quite hers…

Finally, Eustar raised both hands and shook his head.

“Fine, I’ll do as you say. At dawn tomorrow, I’ll go to the constabulary and ask them to investigate the dry well. Is that acceptable?”

“You must also tell them about Madam Nollen.”

A faint smile appeared on Eustar’s lips.

“The constables won’t be able to find any evidence against Madam Nollen in the end. But you still insist on doing it anyway?”

Laila nodded firmly.

“Yes, we must. Even if they find nothing and nothing changes, it’s still the right thing to do.”

“Understood. Now we really must sleep. We’ll need our strength to use the portal. Lie down, Laila.”

She waited until Eustar extinguished the light again, and once the room was completely dark, she walked back to the bed and lay down. Gazing up at the ceiling, she stared into the darkness for a long while.

[This is the timeline separator]

At dawn the next day, Madam Nollen, dozing at a table, looked as if she’d seen a ghost when she saw Laila and Eustar descending the stairs perfectly unharmed.

“What—so… really nothing happened at all?”

Eustar replied.

“It wasn’t exactly nothing. But whatever ‘thing’ was there is gone now. It won’t appear again.”

Madam Nollen’s eyes widened in disbelief, and her thick lips fell open.

“Oh, Kyron, thank you! Goodness, you truly are the Tentinella knights! I was worried you were just trying to get a free room by spinning tall tales!”

“Fortunately, that wasn’t the case.”

“Indeed! I’d steeled myself this morning, expecting to have to clear away another corpse!”

Compared to their first meeting, Madam Nollen was now chatty and rather scatterbrained. Clearly, whatever had been in the room where Laila and Eustar had stayed had been an immense burden to her.

If only you hadn’t abandoned that woman like that, Laila thought—or rather, almost said… But before she could speak, Eustar subtly interrupted her with a natural gesture.

“Then we’ll be on our way.”

“Yes, yes—thank you!”

“You’re very welcome.”

Eustar placed a hand on Laila’s shoulder. The early morning breeze blew past, carrying the fishy scent of the river along with other assorted odors… Laila watched for a moment as Eustar’s hair, tied high, fluttered in the wind.

“Why did you stop me?”

“Because there’s no need for us to expose Madam Nollen’s wrongdoing ourselves. That’s the constables’ job.”

“What’s the difference?”

Laila muttered, her head slightly lowered beneath her hood, hiding her face.

“I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I’d appreciate it if you understood I’m not quite that heartless.”

After a brief silence, Laila exhaled.

“I didn’t think you were that bad.”

“Then I’m relieved. That building over there seems to be the constabulary—let’s just state our business briefly and leave.”

[This is the timeline separator]

Once they left the village and stepped onto the deserted path, Laila felt her mind grow refreshingly clear. Aside from Eustar’s footsteps beside her, there was no other sound.

Only the rustling of wind through branches, the occasional rustle of leaves, or the sound of birds in flight—familiar silences Laila had heard her whole life, softer than perfect quiet, filling the air like gentle cushions.

Laila suddenly spoke, as if remembering something.

“An old king once imprisoned his wife in a room padded entirely with cushions.”

Her voice sounded far clearer and crisper than it had in the village.

Eustar asked, “Why would he do that?”

“Because she despised him deeply. The king feared she might hurt herself by striking her head against something.”

“That’s rather horrifying.”

Laila gave a resigned shrug.

“My mother lamented that if only the queen had been a witch, she wouldn’t have fallen in love with such a man.”

“You don’t actually consider that love, do you, Laila?”

Laila’s crimson eyes grew cold and expressionless.

“No. But isn’t all love like that? Doesn’t it always involve confinement—even if it’s not in a room padded with cushions?”

Eustar tilted his head and smiled faintly.

“Well, perhaps there’s love where neither side feels confined.”

“How? Falling in love inevitably means…”

Laila paused, lips slightly parted as if struggling to find the right word, then said with an uncertain expression,

“…that you keep thinking only of one particular person.”

“I’ve never been in love, but if I ever am, I doubt I’d see it as confinement. You never know, Laila—maybe you’ll feel the same someday.”

That was the end of it. From the start, their perspectives on love were too different for a deep discussion—let alone the fact they’d only known each other for three or four days.

“Ah, we’re finally here. Good thing we arrived before it got too late.”

At Eustar’s words, Laila looked ahead—but saw nothing. There was only a small, circular clearing, and beyond it, a sheer cliff.

“There’s nothing here.”

“Oh, this portal isn’t an object. This place—this spot itself—is the portal. In fact, we’re already within its boundary. The central hub must already know we’re about to move.”

Laila blinked in confusion. The entire space was the portal? Did that mean stepping on differently colored grass would make them float into the air and transport them elsewhere?

Nonsense, she thought. She’d never actually seen one, but she knew well enough what a portal was.

Usually, it was an engraved stone circle, or a stationary object—she’d read in books that such things were used as portals.

“If this is the portal, then… what do we do now?”

Eustar chuckled, looking at Laila as if surprised she still didn’t understand.

“We jump. Of course.”

At the same instant, Eustar wrapped an arm around Laila’s waist and dashed toward the nearby cliff edge.

The moment his foot crossed the precipice, Laila looked down into the dizzying abyss and held her breath. Jagged black rocks stood like massive needles below.

We’re going to die. Laila squeezed her eyes shut, unable to even scream—certain her body would shatter against the rocks before she could exhale.

But it didn’t happen.

A high-pitched, sharp “beep” rang in her ears. Simultaneously, a wave of nausea surged up, and as Laila clutched her stomach, a deep, unfamiliar voice boomed:

“Master Eustar! How many times must I tell you that portal is unstable!”

Male lead is a clingy little husband

One-line summary: The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

Introduction:

One day, Lu Yuner’s soul transmigrates into a female-dominant world. She enters the Imperial Academy and takes up the position of a doctoral instructor, teaching classes and grading schoolwork.

One day, she encounters the young prince Su Qingwan secretly skipping class from the male academy.

As a result, Su Qingwan is punished.

From then on, Su Qingwan sees Lu Yuner as a “thorn in his side”.

But before long, this “thorn” becomes the person he cherishes most, and he goes to great lengths to win Lu Yuner’s affection.

Mini scene 1:

One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.

Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”

Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”

Mini scene 2:

After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.

Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.

1. The female lead is gentle, gracious, humble and polite but not weak. The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

2. 1v1, a bit torturous in the beginning but definitely sweet later on.

You’re bound to regret it if you skip this novel. Read the review & spoiler to find out what you might be missing!
