On a black night, Eustar walked slowly through the darkness, heading somewhere unknown. The only light he could rely on was the faintest star, which flickered weakly as if about to vanish at any moment.

Turning his head to the right like a broken machine or a puppet, he moved his legs without knowing where he was going.

A still, dark expanse of water came into view. Whether stirred by the wind or by a fish, circular ripples occasionally spread out, reaching close to his feet.

The moment he felt puzzled by the ripples reaching his feet, he realized he was standing on the water’s surface. Instantly, his body sank downward, and icy-cold water battered his entire body.

Eustar opened his mouth and swam toward the surface, but his body kept sinking as if weighted down by an anchor tied to his ankles.

Outside the rippling water, a shadow flickered. Not knowing what it was, Eustar reached out to grab it—but all he felt was a cruelly hard, smooth texture.

With a sharp gasp, Eustar jolted upright from his bed, his shoulders trembling violently.

The chill of dawn seeped into the soft linens. Though spring should have arrived soon, the royal palace remained cold and lifeless until sunrise—no amount of firewood thrown into the hearth could change that.

A raspy, irritated voice followed a mocking chuckle. Eustar dragged his palm across his feverish face and roughly raked his long hair back.
