Mel laughed out loud, finding Laila’s words amusing. And she suddenly realized anew just how close she had grown to Laila.

Laila, observed up close, was truly someone worth cherishing and loving. She was pure, free of malice, and always did her best to consider others. Her occasional awkwardness stemmed simply from never having lived such a life before.

Therefore, Mel wished that Laila would show a little more joy about Mel’s affection for her—not for Mel’s sake, but for Laila’s own.

‘It’s not an easy thing.’

Mel let out a soft sigh and picked up the needle she had set aside earlier.

She was secretly adding lace trim to the muslin slip Laila would soon wear. Though she knew Laila disliked anything overly ornate or fussy, Mel held a different opinion.

Whenever she recalled hearing that Laila had grown up never once wearing embroidered garments, or watched her silently sleep in plain clothes without complaint, Mel quietly felt a tinge of loneliness in her heart.

Laila turned her gaze back out the window, and only the soft sound of Mel’s needle moving filled the room, as quiet as falling snow.

But that peaceful stillness did not last long.

After a heavy knock, the attendant guarding the door announced the arrival of a Tentinella agent. The moment Laila stood, the agent entered and bowed.

“Miss Chrisrad.”

“What is it?”

“We’ve received word from Branch Three, Gilronic. They’ve requested your immediate presence.”

“What about Eustar?”

“A message has already been sent to His Highness the Crown Prince.”
