From morning, snow poured down like rain. Even the village clock tower, usually so clear to see, was blurred by the snow’s afterimage.

The maids were busy retrieving the wooden tubs left outside the mansion and closing the well lids. The younger maids giggled as they left their footprints on the pristine snow.

I saw Daymic standing in the middle of the garden, staring blankly at the sky. This year’s first snowfall must have seemed wondrous to him.

After layering on clothes and warming myself by the fireplace, I went downstairs. The familiar scent of a warm stew drifted from the kitchen.

The front door swung open roughly.

Stiana, emerging from her room, spotted Father and approached him.

“The snow came down so heavily that even going down the hill was a struggle! I nearly had a serious accident!”

“Oh dear! Are you hurt anywhere?”

“Other than nearly tumbling down, I’m perfectly fine!”

“I’m glad you’re unharmed. Since breakfast is ready, why not warm yourself first with some stew.”

The fact that it snowed so much he couldn’t go to work was practically good news for me.
