The sound of the clock in the foyer shattered the silence.

The atmosphere in the villa grew heavy. Outside, even thunder raged fiercely. The howling wind and rain showed no sign of abating, roaring with relentless fury. Yurick, utterly dazed, wore an expression of utter despair.

After a short while, even the flickering candle—trembling uneasily—went out. The room plunged into gloom. As my vision dulled, my heightened hearing clearly caught the sounds coming from outside the villa.

Yurick sat on the bed where Yune had lain. Roger and I stood guard beside him. When I lightly touched the bedsheet, it felt damp and clammy.

“The more you worry, the more your heart will ache.”

Roger spoke, staring straight ahead. Though clearly meant as comfort, his words were blunt. Knowing Roger as well as I did, I understood just how much inner turmoil he must have gone through before finally saying it. Despite his rough manner, Roger genuinely cared for Yurick.

“It’s better not to think about anything at all right now.”

Roger got up and fetched a broom from the hallway. With no maids around, he meant to clean the room that had gotten dirty while Madame was away. From somewhere, he produced a rag and placed it in my hand, then handed Yurick a trash bin.

“We need to clean up so your sister can use this room again.”

“…….”

“You should change the bedsheets yourself. Can you do that?”

Roger spoke to Yurick, who gave no reaction at all.

“Have you really turned into a stone? Why are you so quiet?”
