To Become Family with the Male Lead (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 1
It was past midnight. Alone in the house, I read the letter addressed to me over and over again.
Outside the window, thick raindrops fiercely struck the ground. The pitch-black room briefly lit up from a sharp flash of lightning, then plunged back into darkness.
[They have died.]Only after rereading the sentence did it truly sink in. I had lost my entire family. I had also lost my home and my house. Even though I had willingly abandoned both my home and my house, I never intended for my family to be driven to death.
“Lise!”
A voice called out faintly from afar.
Without thinking, I rose from my seat and went downstairs. Outside, a man kept calling my name repeatedly as he knocked on the door. Hesitating whether to open it or not, I finally pulled the doorknob.
The moment a crack appeared in the door, the rain-soaked man pulled me into his arms. His breathing was ragged—as if he’d run all the way here.
“…Are you alright? No, that’s not what I meant to say… I’m just so relieved you’re safe. I’m sorry for being selfish. I’m sorry, Lise.”
He stammered before gently patting my back. More than his gesture, I was bothered by his wet clothes pressing against my bare skin.
“Lise.”
“I always… hated Father, but I never wished for his death. I disliked my family, but that didn’t mean I wanted to lose them. I just…”
“It’s not your fault.”
“…I didn’t ask for much. I never wanted anything. If I had any wish at all, it was just for family. I only wanted my family.”
“Then… be with me. Let’s make a family together and create a happy ending.”
I could feel his hand trembling. But right now, I didn’t want anything at all.
[This is the timeline separator]I was poor. That was me.
To be precise, that was my first life.
Born in the Republic of Korea, I was the only daughter raised between a mother who fell into a cult and a gambling-addicted father.
Since my family wasn’t normal, my life wasn’t ordinary either.
Because of money, I gave up on college and abandoned my parents. And because of money, I died.
Until my very last breath, I dreamed of the male protagonist’s life from the novel I’d read since childhood, “The Hero of House Fenton,” and wished only that in my next life, I’d have plenty of money.
That was probably all I ever wanted.
Money. Banknotes.
But who could have known I’d be reborn into a life even more pitiful than my previous one—despite having all the money—and as a character who only appeared in a single line of “The Hero of House Fenton”?
“Lise! What on earth are you doing?”
I had already been living in this corner of the house for ten years.
I looked at the woman who snatched the book from my hands.
“I was reading.”
I stated the obvious clearly. Isabelle glanced at the epidemiology book I’d been reading and immediately threw it onto the floor.
“Lise, I told you not to read books.”
It wasn’t as if I were reading something indecent or violent—yet she was being overly dramatic. Isabelle had always been like this.
She resented the fact that among her six children, I possessed the sharpest mind. Perhaps that’s why she never assigned me a tutor, unlike the others.
Eventually, I persuaded Silke, who was a year older than me.
‘Don’t you hate studying?’
‘Why ask something so obvious?’
‘Then shall I do it for you?’
Since she particularly disliked studying and books, we understood each other well. We meticulously devised a plan, and for six months, I received lessons in Silke’s place.
At first, the tutor, who had been reluctant, grew enthusiastic upon seeing me grasp his words instantly—unlike Silke.
But loose-lipped Silke told everything to Swell, her twin and the fourth child.
‘Liiise.’
‘What?’
‘You want to study, don’t you? Right?’
Swell demanded I take his lessons as well. Reluctantly entering the room to fulfill his request, I was met, as expected, with the tutor’s nagging.
The next day, the tutor reported everything to Isabelle. In an instant, all my plans dissolved into nothing.
Ever since, she would rush at me the moment I so much as touched a book.
“But you said I could read two books!”
“I changed my mind. Stay away from books for the next month!”
Trending
Though it was unusual to be scolded for studying, I understood Isabelle’s feelings. It must sting to see her five biological children outshined by an outsider’s child.
Illegitimate child, Lise Marceau. Deep red hair and yellow eyes.
Born between a woman who once worked in a brothel and my father, the Count.
The woman who bore me threatened to spread rumors about the Count’s sordid affairs if he didn’t raise me as a daughter of the Marceau household. Frightened by her threat, the Count brought me home.
“This won’t do, Lise. I must send you on an errand. Viti!”
Isabelle called for Viti, the maid who would accompany me.
“Yes, Madam?”
“Go on an errand with Lise. Just deliver the item from the storeroom.”
While Viti went to fetch the item, I dressed in my outdoor clothes. As soon as I stepped outside the front door, Viti came running with the package.
“Oh dear, you dressed yourself again, Miss?”
“You’re busy. Besides, I can manage clothes on my own.”
“Still, Miss, next time please call me instead of doing it alone!”
“Yes, yes. I’ll keep that in mind.”
As soon as we stepped outside the mansion, Viti followed behind. Passing through the garden and out the main gate, the village of Hosha came into full view—bustling with people and the usual marketplace.
In contrast, dense trees lined the mansion perched halfway up the mountain. Though the errand required heading down the hill toward the market, my feet turned sideways instead.
“Miss! Miss Lise! Where are you going?”
Panicked, Viti hastily called after me. From the start, I hadn’t intended to run a simple errand.
When I dashed recklessly into the woods, a startled Viti quickly chased after me. Beyond the trees, a small lake came into sight. It was still winter, and no fish were visible beneath the frozen surface.
I gauged the thickness of the ice and stepped onto the lake. After sliding around for a while, I spotted a flowerbed at the far end.
Vividly colored blooms proudly displayed their hues. Particularly, a violet flower said to bloom only in winter caught my eye.
“Miss!”
“Just a moment! Let’s look around a bit!”
“W-wait! Please hold on!”
Ignoring Viti’s desperate calls, I ran toward the flowerbed.
Pushing through flowers that grew as tall as my head, I moved forward. I sensed someone ahead. Taking a few more steps, I saw a boy and a girl seated in the center.
Their silvery hair, matching the flowers, shimmered in the sunlight. Their clear blue eyes—deeper than the ocean—seemed to pierce right through me. Their doll-like appearances froze me in place.
“Oh? It’s the neighbor’s older sister!”
The little girl pointed at me with her finger. Simultaneously, the boy, having noticed me, closed his book and frowned.
His expression clearly showed he wasn’t pleased to see me.
“Let’s go, Yune.”
The boy stood up.
“Why? I want to stay longer!”
“Mother told us to come back quickly.”
This was the first time we’d met face to face, leaving me momentarily stunned.
That didn’t mean I didn’t know who they were.
Behind the flowerbed stood the Fenton family’s ducal mansion—my neighbor, the Marceau estate where I lived, and also the home of the protagonist of the novel I’d transmigrated into, “The Hero of House Fenton.”
Yes, that beautiful boy glaring fiercely at me right now was Yurick Fenton, the male lead.
…The one who would someday send me to the executioner’s block.
The Marceau and Fenton houses had never been on good terms. The Marceau household was rife with corruption.
And Yurick, who would one day become the head of House Fenton, would expose that corruption and send every member of House Marceau to the gallows.
“Let’s go, Yune.”
“No! Let’s stay a little longer? The neighbor’s sister is here too, okay? Okay?”
Did Yune know? The male lead, Yurick, had never liked the children of House Marceau from the very beginning.
‘Every time I saw those utterly foolish Marceau brats, I felt disgusted.’
I recalled that line from the novel I’d read long ago.
Embarrassed, I tried to leave—but the book in Yurick’s hand suddenly dropped right in front of me.
The moment it fell, all three of us froze.
In the brief silence, I looked down at the open book. I’d assumed Yurick was reading some heroic tale or autobiography—but it was a fairy tale.
One filled with pretty fairies. It was the kind of book I’d read only when I was two years old—something I wouldn’t even glance at now.
‘Ah… Did he bring it to read to Yune?’

I secretly wondered.
“What? This is Oppa’s favorite book!”
Yune said, her voice trembling.
“…”
“…”
Judging by how worn the book was, he’d clearly read it many times.
I picked up the book that had fallen before me, dusted it off thoroughly, and held it out to Yurick—but he’d already stepped forward, his face deeply flushed, and snatched it away.
Tucking the book into his chest, Yurick immediately turned his back and headed toward the Fenton mansion, tightly holding his sister’s hand.
“Neighbor’s sister!”
Just then, Yune suddenly called out to me.
“What’s your name? What’s your name?”
“…Lise. Lise Marceau.”
“Lise? That’s a pretty name! Then let’s meet again! Pretty sister!”
She beamed brightly and waved her hand enthusiastically at me. I shyly waved back.
It was a sudden encounter. While I stood dazed, Viti’s voice rang out from afar—she must have been searching for me all this time.
“Miss! Where are you? Miss!”
“Oh…”
I ran toward Viti. She stood there, on the verge of tears, having thought she’d lost me.
“I was so frightened I’d lost you!”
“I’m sorry.”
“What on earth were you doing?”
“Just… I happened to see some pretty flowers. It’s getting late—let’s hurry to the village before Mother scolds us.”

When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.

What is this? Poor Liz died because of her irresponsible family, and now she’s being born here to a family that will hurt her. Is knowledge wrong? I hope she finds happiness in this life.

Everyone has the right to learn and read. Teach your children well. What’s wrong with our dear Liz if she’s smarter than your children?
