Cassel had no interest whatsoever in things like the Dark Moon Curse or the Clan of the Night.

So when he heard that matches featuring the Clan of the Night in that ruined arena were called “moon viewing,” he scoffed.

Moon viewing on a night when the moon had vanished—what a rustic name, fitting only for the audience’s level, he thought.

But when he came face to face with a member of the Clan of the Night imprisoned in an ornate iron cage, an unfamiliar shock overwhelmed him.

‘It’s just a child?’

Inside two elaborate iron cages, resembling birdcages, one person was confined in each.

One was a masked adult, the other an unmasked child.

Cassel’s gaze locked onto the child.

He was a boy of about twelve, with soft brown curls like lamb’s wool and an oddly sorrowful expression.

“Don’t be fooled by appearances. That one isn’t human.”

As Cassel stared intently at the child, the arena owner smoothly interjected.

“Do you happen to know how the Clan of the Night comes into being? Ah, of course, someone of your stature wouldn’t need to know such things.”

Though Cassel didn’t even respond, the arena owner continued flatteringly.

“The Dark Moon Curse is the grudge of a dead dragon. Thus, on the darkest night, it inevitably kills the living—but apparently, that alone isn’t enough to satisfy it, so it seeks out humans like me: demons wearing human masks, suitable vessels for its wrath.”

The arena owner lowered his voice subtly, adopting the manner of a storyteller sharing ghost tales with a child.
