Ivy’s reproach was calm. So much so that Cassel missed his chance to get angry.

“Besides, it’s far too late to claim it was a misunderstanding now. By this point, the other nobles must have already figured it out—that I was the one who exposed your misconduct, my lord.”

“That’s your own doing.”

“If I hadn’t gone this far, would I even have had the chance to speak to you like this? I’d have just been left alone like some beaten child who couldn’t even cry.”

At Ivy’s reasonable retort, Cassel—who had been growling—suddenly narrowed his brows.

“Thanks to you, my reputation is completely ruined. Just yesterday, I was seen as the kindest of all the saintess candidates, and now they’ll think of me as a viper who strikes the moment you slip up. And after all this, pretending it never happened would just sound like mockery, wouldn’t it?”

Ivy asked back in a voice so calm it bordered on indifferent. A strange glint flickered in Cassel’s eyes, which had been fiercely alert just moments before.

He forgot his anger entirely and stroked his chin thoughtfully, as if intrigued.

“…You’re right. I really did underestimate you. If this wasn’t some reckless charge but a calculated gamble, then that changes everything.”

Cassel muttered to himself, then gave a hollow laugh as he looked at Ivy.

“Ha! I was completely fooled. Just how hard were you playing the innocent?”

“Just enough to become the saintess.”

At Ivy’s reply, Cassel finally laughed properly.

Ever the pragmatist, he readily admitted his mistake. He’d assumed Ivy was just another common fox whose only assets were her looks and feigned innocence. Her defiant attitude had irritated him, but now he realized her judgment and resolve were far better than he’d expected.
