At the butler’s whisper, Rio flinched and halted the hand she had been about to push him away with.

Then, without moving anything but her eyes, she glanced back toward the mansion.

There, she saw maids with white ribbons tied around their necks all turn their backs and walk away in unison—as if they had been closely watching this very spot just moments before.

Swallowing hard at the eerie sight, Rio heard the butler add in his usual hushed tone,

“Thus, I must urge you to speak of important matters only in front of Lady Ivy.”

With those words, the butler stepped back and offered a polite smile—one as carefully crafted as those in portraits.

Meanwhile, the carriage had arrived.

Ivy’s butler courteously saw the guest off until Rio boarded the carriage, and only after it passed through the main gate of Ivory Mansion did Rio finally release the breath she’d been holding.

‘It was true…’

Everything her older sister had said was true.
