Evie recalled the Count’s oncearrogant appearance, now bespectacled and shabby, and laughed.
This was clearly an opportunity given to Evie by heaven.
[Star Icon][Star Icon][Star Icon]In the evening, as promised, Evie went to visit Mrs. Marso with DS.
The lady had generously set the table and was waiting for the two, just as promised.
“You’ve become quite the lady. I was always uncomfortable, not knowing whether you were alive or dead.”
Mrs. Marso spoke with a tender voice.
The lady was truly glad to see Evie, and Evie felt the same.
Mrs. Marso was one of the few kind adults in Evie’s memory. Of course, it was a favor made possible because of the fortuneteller, but still, she had taken good care of young Evie as a landlord.
So Evie could converse quite enjoyably with her.
During the lively conversation, Evie naturally turned the subject.
“Do you still provide meals to people living alone these days?”
“Well, I don’t know if I can say that I provide for them. There’s one person living now, but he’s often out.”
“Oh, so the other rooms are empty?”
“No, the current tenant is using the whole second floor by himself. It’s a bit peculiar.”
Mrs. Marso whispered. Judging by her glance towards the upper floor, the peculiar tenant must be there.
“Earlier, the children were calling him a teacher.”
“That’s what I mean by peculiar. At first, he locked himself in his room reading books all day, and then he suddenly started teaching the kids to read.”
At the lady’s words, Evie smiled quietly.
It was the first time she’d heard that the Count had a hobby of reading.
“The children must make it lively. Is there a lesson tomorrow?”
“No, not tomorrow. It’s the day of the new moon. The children need to prepare at home.”
Then the Count would be free.
Thinking it was a good opportunity, Evie casually spoke.
“Madam, could we rent a room for about three days? We haven’t decided where to stay yet.”
“Oh, what should I do? There’s only one vacant room on the first floor. The person is using the entire second floor, so I can’t just give it away.”
The lady said, looking troubled, so Evie quickly leaned her head on DS’s shoulder next to her.
“I haven’t introduced him yet. This is my husband.”
“I came with my wife because she missed her hometown.”
“Oh, in that case! Then one room will be enough!”
DS also leaned affectionately towards Evie, and Mrs. Marso did not detect their deception.
The liars successfully infiltrated.
.
.
.
And the momentary pretendcouple, the lying liars, once in the room, fought fiercely over the bed.
How can you think to make me sleep on the floor? You’re disqualified as a servant!
How can you think the bed is naturally yours? A servant is a person too.
Hey, you’re not letting this go?
Don’t ask…!
At the end of a silent battle, the two eventually collapsed, exhausted.
“Count is right above us, and we have to fight over something like this?”
“That’s what I want to say……”
Evie glanced sharply at DS, who didn’t budge a word.
Then, as if trying to sense Count Laurel’s presence, she inclined her ear to the ceiling.
“If we want to negotiate or threaten, we have to meet the Count…… How should we approach him?”
After seeing Count Laurel earlier, Evie’s biggest concern was that he would leave the village altogether.
It’s common to hide one’s whereabouts if one’s stern appearance is caught.
And if the Count disappears here, there’s nothing left for Evie except a sighting.
So, trying to say ‘I saw Count Laurel pretending to be a commoner in Vis,’ would just be considered a lie.
So Evie kept watching this house nearby to make sure the Count didn’t disappear.
Staying in this house was also because she considered the possibility of him sneaking away at midnight.
“We’ll have to approach while keeping the line. Whether it’s a negotiation or a threat.”
“The line?”
“A line that won’t anger Count Laurel.”
It means not to offend the Count too much, so Evie narrowed her brows unhappily.
“The situation now is not a big threat to the Count. It’s just making him uncomfortable or annoyed. So if we cross the line and offend the Count’s feelings, we will ultimately be at a loss.”
“It’s unfair, protecting ourselves when the other side has crossed the line.”
Evie grumbled but understood DS’s words.
In Tienda, where the difference in status is clear, pride is a right and humiliation is a duty.
So the conflict between a great nobleman and a commonborn saintess candidate doesn’t stand in the first place.
One side survives with the other’s mercy.
So even though she found out the Count’s secret, all Evie can do now is plead, ‘Keep quiet about this and help me.’
‘It’s good, you’ve been a difficult person since birth.’
Evie was admitting her predicament with a light complaint.
There was a creaking noise from the ceiling. So Evie and DS were startled and stopped talking.
Creak, creak, the regular sound of old wooden boards screaming continued.
It was the sound of someone stepping down the old wooden stairs from upstairs.
[Star Icon][Star Icon][Star Icon]When that staircase sound rang out, Evie was already in her nightgown.
So Evie came out of the room with a shawl over her, carefully following the footsteps that had already passed.
A shadow of a lantern was cast in the kitchen.
Evie approached there without a sound and soon encountered a man there.
He must have run out of water all day in his room, as he was holding an empty water bottle.
“Hello.”
Evie greeted the man, who was still wearing glasses, in a gentle voice.
“It’s nice to see you again, sir.”
And she smiled prettily, but the man didn’t even give her a small smile.
“Use the title that suits you.”
Instead, he spoke coldly as always, and then added this to Evie, who looked a bit surprised.
“If you make a servant your husband to rent a room, the conclusion must already be drawn.”
Sion’s expression, as he concluded so decisively, was as arrogant as ever.
So Evie thought he was a really nervewracking guy.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
