Edward, who had just tucked the handkerchief he’d used to wipe his hands back into his pocket, shifted his gaze to what Louisa was holding.

“Lord Aberitt’s favored paper, I see. Are you planning to write something on it and send it off?”

“Yes. I thought it might need a certain aristocratic weight to it.”

Louisa gave the paper a light flutter. It shimmered with a subtle pearly sheen, thick and substantial—definitely a luxurious sheet.

Edward found that choice slightly burdensome and tilted his head back a bit as he spoke.

“If I were to use something like that, I’d probably just get called pretentious.”

“The gossip will come regardless of whether you use it or not. In cases like this, it’s better to have it than not.”

“I suppose so.”

Edward pondered briefly before nodding in agreement.

Indeed, I’d once thought the same—that if my presence or absence wouldn’t stop people from belittling my wife, then I might as well be present.

“Then I’ll leave that to you, and I’ll head back to my desk now.”

“Mm. Don’t overexert yourself.”

Thus, the two sat down at their desks, placed side by side with a distance of about seven feet between them, and focused on their respective tasks.

Though the party had been hastily planned, it couldn’t be taken lightly. Louisa meticulously drafted instructions for the Johnsons and Guildford.
