“Huh?”

“What’s this? What is this?”

Edward pointed to one of the internal components. At that, the employee seated beneath him, reassembling the disassembled parts, turned his head back and spoke.

“Oh, you mean this shape? I’ve been wondering too—every product we brought in has this groove carved into it identically. I kept pondering what effect this could possibly have on the car’s functionality.”

The employee pointed to the small, uniformly carved grooves on the top of the bolt.

“After much thought, I concluded it doesn’t affect functionality at all. It’s just decorative engraving. Of course, I still don’t understand why anyone would bother doing that on an internal part no one ever sees.”

He shrugged his shoulders, apparently dismissing the matter as just another incomprehensible quirk of Westwood.

But Edward couldn’t brush it off so easily like the employee did. He stepped closer and picked up the bolt in question.

[Ah, you mean this? It’s just, well… sort of my signature.]

[Once I make something and hand it over, it’s no longer mine—but it’ll always remain my work. So I carve it. To say that I, Benjamin Allen, was here.]

Edward gripped the small component tightly in his hand.

“Ed?”

Edward’s face had hardened into an expression so grim it was frightening. The knuckles on his clenched fist stood out stark white, trembling faintly.

At Louisa’s worried call, Edward’s lips parted briefly before closing again. He slowly shook his head once or twice.

“No… never mind.”
