I truly thought it was fortunate.

But dark circles were spreading under Edward’s eyes.

He mechanically gulped down the honey tea. He couldn’t taste anything at all.

Edward looked at his wife. Certainly, there was still something pitiful and sorrowful about her—but it was merely a remnant left behind because she, too, had once loved him sincerely.

Yes. My wife had loved me.

Now, only I still loved her.

And even that love was imperfect—enough to ruin everything—and yet I, a fool who didn’t even know what to do, dared to overstep my bounds.

Edward forced his voice out with great effort.

“I’m glad. It seems you’re finally living well enough.”

“I suppose so.”

Louisa lifted the teacup she’d been holding partly to warm her hands and took a small sip of honey tea. She spoke with a gentle smile.

“Being able to talk with you this comfortably, learning things I didn’t know before… It hurts sometimes, but… I still prefer this. Better than those old days when I could only suffer in silence.”

A faint, light smile lingered at the corner of his wife’s lips.

Edward swallowed down the lump rising to his throat. Something hot threatened to spill out, but he pressed on with his words.

“I’m really glad you think it’s good. I hope you recover fully and live well. As you said… we should be happy.”
