“How important could this conversation possibly be that you insisted on moving to another place just to talk?”

Edward asked, his voice clearly brimming with irritation.

Gerard subtly turned his head to gauge the distance between himself and Louisa. Confirming she was sufficiently far away, he lowered his voice and spoke in a coaxing tone.

“It’ll be a good offer for you, so stop sulking and just hear me out.”

Edward narrowed his brows sharply and crossed his arms, as if challenging him to go ahead and say whatever nonsense he had in mind.

“I know as well as you do that things between you and your wife aren’t exactly rosy. Sure, lately you’ve been sticking close to her because of your new research announcement, but I’m well aware that it’s all hollow inside.”

Nonsense right from the start. Edward raised one eyebrow skeptically.

He’d agreed to hear him out only to see what fresh nagging he’d come up with, and now this absurd drivel?

“My daughter is of prime marriageable age. But the suitor I’ve arranged for her isn’t to her liking at all.”

“What does that have to do with me? Don’t waste my time—just get straight to the point.”

Gerard glared at Edward’s surly insistence with squinted eyes. He sighed heavily before speaking again.

“…I’m making you an offer. Marry into my family as a son-in-law and inherit my title.”

“Ha!”

It was utterly ridiculous. Edward let out a loud, derisive laugh.
