Thus, Edward fled the Aberitt mansion as if escaping, driving his carriage away in haste.

Louisa was left all alone in the garden, surrounded by countless gift boxes.

It was something she had often experienced before—the enormous boxes pouring into the mansion and the lavish luxuries filling her dressing room to the brim.

Yet all of it was merely money given in place of a debt.

A massive debt he could never erase from his heart, even after repaying everything his father had absconded with—and even after generating an even greater fortune.

And the money he had placed beside him in her stead, labeled as an “expensive gift,” to repay that debt.

But strangely, today felt different.

Perhaps it was because she recalled the memory of that day they had gone together. Instead of feeling like money thrust thoughtlessly into her hands, it felt more like an ordinary, affectionate present.

“A gift he chose for me, thinking of me and taking the time to select it…”

She looked up at the mountain of boxes piled behind her.

From somewhere deep within her heart, something invisible rose waveringly like a mirage.

Louisa remembered the dress from the previous king’s birthday celebration.

That utterly wretched gown, chosen and handed to her by another woman who adored him, while he spent time with that very woman.

Caught between her present feelings and past pain, she stood there silently lost in thought.

Yet her desire to protect herself outweighed any urge to chase hope, and so she finally set her jaw firmly.
