In every house, it hung like a promise—a symbol of a harmonious household.

But for Edward, who had once been poor, it was an exception. He was so destitute that even this seemed a luxury.

All he could barely manage to find was an unnamed local painter who offered cheap portraits.

The only thing he could give his wife for her birthday during their newlywed days was a small portrait, painted with rough brushstrokes by an anonymous artist.

After that, Edward grew to hate photographs.

Even after he acquired enough wealth later in life that he could easily afford a personal exhibition, whenever he saw someone else’s family photo, he was reminded of those days.

That was why he refused his wife’s request.

Once their situation improved, naturally, his wife had suggested taking a family portrait.

But Edward kept putting her off, saying, “Next time,” “Next year,” or “After this matter is settled.”

There was a reason.

Taking a photo now would mean admitting that, all this time, he hadn’t “chosen not to” take one—he simply “couldn’t.”

Looking back now, it was nothing more than foolish insecurity.

But that was how he felt then. Because of that misplaced pride, he always postponed the promise, saying they’d do it next time. After this happened repeatedly, his wife first became hesitant, and eventually stopped mentioning photos altogether.

Back then, he truly believed his wife would always be by his side.
