Edward’s mind flashed through the recent events.

“Ah, yes. Of course. A secret love so deeply hidden, not even shown to the wife. I must have completely missed it.”

“I haven’t heard anything from Mr. Curtis, but such things are apparent to anyone with eyes.”

He should have realized when his close associates, Jeffrey and Gilford, mentioned it. If Luisa, the person involved, couldn’t recognize his feelings, others, mere outsiders, were even less likely to notice.

“But no matter what, me, having a mistress while being with Luisa!”

Edward’s anger surged to its peak.

What kind of insane people are concocting such fantasies?

Grinding his teeth, he said, “Who are these lunatics spouting such delusions?”

“You should attend the party to clarify this,” Paul said gently, characteristic of an elderly person.

Edward felt a gut-wrenching frustration.

Being present, Luisa was belittled as the woman who married into a lowly con artist’s family.

Absent, she’s now labeled as a woman neglected even by such a man.

Why can’t anything go right?

He closed his eyes tightly.

Why can’t my efforts to make Luisa happy ever succeed?

It was painfully humiliating. His name, attached to Luisa’s, only seemed to diminish her worth.

Now that he understood the wait, he vowed not to cause her the same pain again. Yet despite such resolve, he failed to act upon it.

The welling emotions turned his eyes red. Noting his distressed look, Paul stepped back and continued softly.

“I don’t know the exact circumstances. But Mrs. Luisa agreed with my thoughts, asking to end the conversation there.”

Edward blinked rapidly, trying to hold back his tears. Composing himself, he replied shakily, “Alright. Thanks, Johnson.”

“You’re welcome. I hope you both have a good time.”

As Luisa approached, Paul bowed and stepped aside.

Edward drove Luisa’s car to the porch of the mansion.

Perfectly aligning the car for Luisa, he got out and opened the back passenger door for her.

“Here, get in. I’ll take you.”

But instead of sitting in the back, Luisa opened the front passenger door and climbed in.

This again tugged at Edward’s heart. He lowered his gaze to match Luisa’s and said, “Why? Just sit in the back.”

“How can I sit in the back when you’re driving?”

Luisa retorted as if he was saying something absurd.

It felt a bit blunt, but Edward found relief in her words.

“Right. You’re right. You should sit beside me when I’m driving.”

His voice finally regained some life.

With a gentle vibration, the car started moving.

It was their first shared morning commute.

Even though it was a familiar route, it felt refreshingly new to him.
Edward glanced at his neatly dressed wife beside him, looking beautiful as ever today.

‘I wish we could just run away for a picnic together.’

But such sweet fantasies were premature, considering the bigger challenges that still lay ahead. He broached the subject with Luisa, spurred by what he had heard from Paul.

“Listen.”

Luisa turned her attention to him.

“You asked me earlier if I had plans to attend the royal party this time.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Well, I’ve decided. I’m going.”

Luisa looked at him, slightly surprised, but soon spoke in her usual calm voice.

“I see.”

“Yes. I will attend this party. With you.”

He knew she wasn’t too keen on his presence. But he couldn’t leave her side unattended.

He asserted firmly, “So, just be aware of that. I will definitely go.”

Edward gripped the steering wheel tightly.

Valiant Palace strictly controlled outsiders’ access.

Meaning Edward, who hadn’t made prior requests, would find it difficult to enter.

“I could still get in if I really wanted to.”

Luisa looked up at him incredulously as he casually talked about breaking the rules. She eyed him reproachfully, prompting Edward to quickly close his mouth.

“If nothing unusual happens, it should end at the usual time. So, don’t waste precious time here, go to the company.”

“Wasting time waiting for you? What kind of talk is that?”

“Using your own words.”

Luisa replied cynically.

Did I say that? Edward’s mouth clamped shut.

Luisa, wrapping her outer shawl, commented.

“The employees must have worked hard too. It looked like you had a drink yesterday, a party perhaps?”

“Yeah. Right.”

In truth, the drinking had been done alone at home, but he didn’t correct her.

“Do well today. Express your gratitude to Mr. Curtis for the hard work, and discuss future plans.”

“I already did that yesterday.”

“And don’t forget Lord Theodore.”

“Damn it. Fine.”

Edward replied in a subdued voice.

“I’ll be back later.”

Luisa greeted him as usual.

But Edward’s farewell was different this time.

“Yeah. Take care.”

Waving at her with a gentle smile, he resembled the man he had tried to bury in his memories.

Luisa felt a surge of nostalgia.

Those were happy times.

She absentmindedly touched the braid in her hair.

How could those large, clumsy hands be so adept at such delicate tasks?

She mused over a memory tucked away in her mind.

There was a time when everyone had at least one photograph. But they couldn’t afford such luxuries.
Like many others, Luisa used to get her photograph taken once or twice a year in her childhood, but such occasions became scarce after her father’s death.

It must have bothered her, because on her birthday, Edward brought in a local portrait artist. He even found some white flowers, weaving them into her hair, prompting her to say:

“It reminds me of our wedding day.”

“Why? Because of the flowers?”

“Yes. We had Lisianthus then too.”

“They make me think of you.”

“How so?”

“That’s a secret.”

“You’re such a tease.”

After her playful scolding, he laughed and said, “Someday, when I’ve made it, let’s have another wedding.”

“All of a sudden?”

“Yes. I’ll give you the most extravagant bouquet no one has ever received. I’ll cover your path with flowers, and the bouquet… let’s have Geoffrey catch it for his betrothed.”

That was the first and last painting capturing their tender moments.

When they moved to the capital, she wanted to hang it in the living room, but he strongly disagreed, and its whereabouts became unknown.

‘What will happen to that painting after our divorce?’

Will it be painted over or tossed out as canvas waste?

Despite being prepared for it, the thought was painful.

But she couldn’t let him take up more space in her life. She needed to sort out her memories with him before breaking completely.

Even though they were happy then, it was different now.

Leaving her husband behind, she walked into the meeting room.

“I should move this office next to the house.”

Driving, Edward grumbled about the inconvenient route. He couldn’t ignore his wife’s words, so he was on his way to Curtis’s office.

He had agreed to Curtis’s suggestion to set up the office in the city center for easier client access, but this made his own visits inconvenient.

Eventually, he reached the office, where a mutual displeasure meeting ensued.

“What brings you here today?” Curtis asked, expressionless as usual.

“What if I had an issue?”

“If it’s about the failed gift, consider your approach first.”

“Bold words for an employee.”

“I know I’m irreplaceable.”

Unable to argue, Edward changed the subject.

“High-output control. It was a success.”

Curtis responded indifferently at first, but then asked again in surprise, “Success? You mean the high-output control project?”

“Yes, I did it. The big thing I was working on.”

“Now’s not the time to be here.”

Curtis adjusted his glasses and said, “Sit down. Let’s have a cup of tea before you leave.”
Curtis adjusted his glasses.

“Please, have a seat. Let’s have a cup of tea before you go.”

He busily shuffled papers on his desk with brisk movements as he spoke.
