Damion lifted his head. From Ansi’s dry lips, pressed tight in pain, her brother’s name slipped out. She seemed to be searching for him—unsure whether he was alive or dead, lost in dreams.

Damion clenched his jaw and replaced the washcloth. Even though he’d swapped the overheated cloth for a cool one, Ansi’s expression showed no relief.

He gently wiped her body with the cloth. Ansi shivered. Yet, to ease even a fraction of the fever enveloping her, he kept moving the cool cloth over her skin.

〈Is Ansi truly happy by your side?〉

Cardian’s question echoed in Damion’s ears.

Was Ansi truly happy beside him? To that question, Damion couldn’t answer confidently. No—he was afraid to answer at all.

Because whatever he might say, he knew it would be the wrong answer for Ansi.

Ansi slowly opened her eyes. Red dawn light seeped through the window gap. Pushing aside the cool washcloth on her forehead, she sat up.

She frowned. Her whole body ached stiffly. But the fever that had covered her had subsided.

Truthfully, it didn’t matter. In fact, she almost preferred having the fever—then she could sink into sleep without thinking. She could justify postponing decisions by using her illness as an excuse.

But the fever had already broken, and Ansi had to start thinking again.

〈”Three days. Within that time, leave Damion and come to me. If not… your brother will die.”〉

The threat to kill Derel wasn’t idle talk. If he could kill his own wife Bekisi so easily, how much easier would it be to kill Derel?
