The sun had already begun to set outside the window. Cardian, seated with his legs crossed in a chair, let his gaze slide away from the crimson sky.
Ansi lay quietly asleep on the bed. The woman’s face, bathed in the golden hues of sunset, was beautiful. Her serene, calm expression held a charm entirely different from the bold confidence she’d shown yesterday when she’d come looking for Cardian.
So much so that he could almost forgive her for ruining his event.
Just then, Ansi frowned slightly. Cardian, who had been quietly observing her, raised an eyebrow.
Soon after, Ansi struggled to open her eyes.
“You’re awake.”
At the gentle voice, Ansi abruptly sat upright. A small groan escaped her lips as a headache, sharp as if her skull were being crushed, washed over her.
She pulled back slightly and bit her parched lips. Her wide-open eyes, filled with pain, looked as though she were staring at an enemy ready to harm her.
“How are you feeling?”
Cardian asked without a hint of disturbance. Ansi finally seemed to recognize her surroundings and glanced around before speaking.
“Where’s Damion?”
Her voice cracked as it slipped through her lips. It sounded as if she were still haunted by her desperate cries for help when Damion had been shot.
When Cardian didn’t answer, Ansi immediately tried to get out of bed. Cardian rose from his seat and stopped her.
“Damion’s surgery went well.”
“I need to see him….”
