The ladies present turned their eyes toward Marianne.

In truth, it would have been better for them if Ansi had stayed. With no one present to receive the game when it arrived, there would be less comparison made.

“Oh dear, Ansi. Does it hurt much?”

Marianne asked with feigned concern, though her tone betrayed slight dissatisfaction—if it wasn’t truly painful, she meant for Ansi to remain seated.

She had gone to the trouble of bringing Damion along—whom she didn’t even particularly like—just to create a scene where only Bekisi and Ansi received heaps of game. If Ansi left, wouldn’t that effect be diminished?

Yet she wasn’t the one holding the highest authority here.

“Go ahead, Ansi.”

Amelia gazed at Ansi with eyes full of worry. At Amelia’s permission, Ansi rose from her seat. Only then did Marianne reluctantly say,

“Alright, Ansi. Go rest. It’s not as if we’re the ones hunting anyway.”

“Thank you.”

Ansi bowed her head and turned away.

Her glance brushed past the Empress, who had so readily let her go without even knowing what she intended to do. Ansi’s eyes trembled—but she pushed aside any unnecessary sentimentality and hurried off.

Ansi, who had been frowning as if in pain, immediately smoothed her expression once she reached a spot beyond the ladies’ sight. Her face settled into cold indifference.

Whether by heaven’s grace or not, she truly hadn’t felt well since yesterday. Ansi had decided to exploit this.

She had applied makeup to accentuate her pallor before attending tea time. Naturally, Bekisi had asked about her complexion.
