Ansi’s heart beat just a little faster than usual.

Accomplice. That rigid word, spoken from that man’s lips, somehow felt irresistibly seductive and alluring.

“We’ll need to destroy the evidence as well.”

Damion extended the hand not holding the paper. Ansi, her eyes still clouded with confusion, merely sent both hands behind her back and cast him a wary glance.

Damion approached Ansi. He reached out his arms as if to embrace her. Ansi quickly moved the book away with one hand, determined not to let him take it.

But the book wasn’t his target.

Damion grasped Ansi’s hand and interlaced his fingers with hers. Startled by the unfamiliar sensation, Ansi instinctively spread her fingers wide.

“Behind the orphanage, there’s an open space where hardly anyone passes by. We’d better burn it there.”

The man took Ansi’s hand and began to walk. Dazed, she followed him out of the library.

“Shh.”

Damion raised his index finger to his lips.

It was a peaceful afternoon—children were asleep, and adults were resting. Feeling that even a single footstep in the corridor might be too loud, Ansi deliberately lifted her heels as she walked.

They slipped out through the back door of the orphanage. Only then, as Ansi finally caught her breath, did Damion pull out a match and set the paper in his hand ablaze.

The smell of burning filled the air. Almost ashamed of her earlier attempt to keep the book, Ansi hurriedly handed it over to him. He chuckled softly and burned the book too.

Only then did Ansi let out a sigh of relief.
