“Why did you like this painting, Damion?”

At Ansi’s question, he swallowed hard, forcing the dryness down his throat.

It was nothing special. He had simply realized that even this aloof woman had interests of her own.

No—that wasn’t quite right. He’d already known from prior research that she loved stars; it would be more accurate to say he’d finally felt that fact for himself.

Damion gave a casual, lopsided smile.

“It’s probably for a silly reason.”

“I won’t laugh.”

Ansi was now staring straight at him. After a brief hesitation, Damion opened his mouth.

“It reminded me of the night sky I saw that day, after escaping the maze.”

It was said to please her—but it wasn’t untrue.

His eyes traced from her raven-black hair to her wide-open eyes, then to her tightly closed lips.

Should he change the subject? She wasn’t immune to awkward flattery, after all.

But her reply defied his expectations.

“That day remains vivid in my memory too. I’ve seen countless night skies, but maybe it’s because that was the first time I looked up at one with you.”

Damion was momentarily speechless.
