In the darkness, Damion opened his eyes narrowly. Struggling to lift his heavy eyelids, he looked ahead.

He saw the familiar back of a man. Damion instantly recognized who it belonged to.

Cardian.

His half-brother, executed several months ago.

Why was he standing right before him, despite being surely dead? Damion frowned and took a step toward him.

Cardian was laughing, his shoulders shaking with amusement. His chuckles blended into a soft hum. Suddenly, as if sensing Damion’s presence, he stopped moving.

An uneasy tension hung between them. Damion’s chest tightened. Just as he let out a stifled groan, Cardian turned around and grinned widely.

In his hand was a white candle. Damion followed the dripping wax downward with his eyes. The molten wax fell onto Ansi, who sat slumped like a corpse, eyes closed.

‘No!’

He shouted, but no sound came out.

At that moment, Damion suddenly realized he held a pistol in his hand.

Without hesitation, Damion aimed the gun at Cardian. With a loud gunshot, Cardian collapsed instantly on the spot.

Damion exhaled sharply, slowly closing and reopening his eyes. In that instant, the one he thought had fallen was now someone else. It was neither Cardian nor Ansi.

‘Leo.’

A subordinate from his unit—the one who had shot him back then. He had later confessed he’d been acting under Cardian’s orders, then left only an apology before taking his own life.
