The Duke of Rodwell’s funeral was held in great quiet.

Only about ten nobles, including Isabel, stood around the ducal family cemetery.

Even Rustis, the Duke’s grandson, had said he would arrive only a few days later due to a sudden fever.

Isabel claimed she had been too overwhelmed by the Duke’s unexpected death to inform anyone.

Yet everyone had already guessed the truth.

They hadn’t attended the funeral out of fear of falling out of the Emperor’s favor.

“Still, I’m surprised not a single person from the Noble Council showed up.”

“They’ve all gone to His Majesty’s banquet, haven’t they? After all, it’s to welcome the Papal investigator himself.”

“His Majesty must have deliberately chosen today—to force them to pick one or the other.”

“That’s too cruel. He was, after all, the head of the Noble Council, yet they gave him such a shabby funeral.”

“This isn’t the time to worry about others. We should hurry back ourselves.”

Strange, indeed—whispers spoken in hushed tones reached her ears all the more clearly.

Their murmurs came through to Isabel’s ears perfectly intact.

Though she didn’t wish to hear them, they sounded as if whispered right into her ear.

Then again, this wasn’t the first time it had happened.
