Adele woke from her sleep after just an hour. When she said she couldn’t fall back asleep, Mark sighed and lent her the book as promised.

However, she ended up stuck with Jade and Pauline all through early evening because they kept pestering her to play a board game.

Only after the two children finally fell asleep could she take the book and go find the Silver Wolf.

All this time, the Silver Wolf had remained completely still in his slumber. Watching his back rise and fall evenly with each breath, Adele barely managed to suppress her anxiety.

“Chris, I’m way too late, aren’t I? But don’t be mad—I brought you a present. It’s a book about the wolf clan.”

Holding the book borrowed from Mark, Adele sat down comfortably beside the Silver Wolf and began reading aloud.

She hoped that hearing her voice might help him wake up a little faster.

“…Yet even this seemingly perfect beast possesses several fatal weaknesses. We must exploit these weaknesses to eliminate them…”

The book’s author argued that the wolf clan were mere beasts incapable of coexisting with humans—and even proposed methods to exterminate them entirely.

“First, wounds sustained in combat between members of the same clan heal at a drastically reduced rate. This is because their fangs and claws secrete a special substance during battle. That’s precisely why these apex predators, who have no natural enemies, never multiplied exponentially.”

Adele paused her reading for a moment and muttered to herself.

“Mark was right. That’s why the wound you got fighting Stone didn’t heal easily.”

She gently stroked the Silver Wolf’s neck.

“Chris, so if you ever end up fighting another of your kin again, avoid close combat. Just let me shoot him with my pistol—no, wait, I’ll do the shooting, so you stay out of it. Got it? Which means don’t go picking fights behind my back.”

After speaking as if admonishing a child, she resumed reading the book.
