“Why are you standing there like that? Do you have something to say to me?”

The Empress asked as if unaware of Adele’s situation.

“There seem to be too few chairs, Your Majesty.”

At that, Seira quickly stepped forward.

“Oh dear, what shall we do? These tables and chairs are all there are in the Empress’s quarters.”

That was utter nonsense.

Yet the Empress spoke to the gathered ladies with a serious expression.

“I’m sorry, but is there anyone willing to give up their seat for Miss Adele?”

Of course, no one stood up.

Seira then came forward before the Empress and spoke carefully yet gravely.

“Your Majesty, I know this is presumptuous, but none of the noble ladies gathered here hold a lower status than Miss Adele. After all, she is merely the Baron’s fiancée, not yet his wife.”

Other noblewomen immediately chimed in as if they’d been waiting for this moment.

“Exactly. Miss Adele is still only the illegitimate daughter of Baron Grills. Asking noble ladies to yield their seats to an illegitimate daughter of a baronial house could be taken as an insult.”

“Unless, of course, she becomes the former Marchioness of House Oswald once again.”

At those words, the women let out quiet giggles.
