Someone was standing in front of the bed.

The light filtering in from outside was dim, so she couldn’t see clearly, but Adele instinctively knew who it was.

How could she not know? That person was etched in her heart, indelible.

Yet, being alone with him like this made her feel oddly afraid.

What was he thinking, watching her sleep in this darkness?

It was clear it wasn’t longing. She could sense a faint smell of alcohol and a chilling coldness emanating from him.

It felt as though she were standing before a beast that might pounce and tear at her throat at any moment.

“I’m sorry, Your Majesty. I was tired and fell asleep.”

Adele got out of bed as calmly as possible. She stepped back slightly, putting some distance between herself and Christine.

As if reading her mind, his brow furrowed. Of course, Adele didn’t see it.

“I was under the impression guests are escorted to the parlor. Does my lady have a habit of sleeping in any bedroom when tired? Or…”

Christine stepped closer, whispering.

“Or… did you miss me?”

Startled, Adele glared and shouted.

“No!”
