“So, does that mean he stands above my head?”
“That’s not what I meant at all.”
Renisha slapped Rexus’s hand away. Her jaw ached. That madman. If Cassius hadn’t risen from his seat, what would Rexus have done right here, in front of everyone?
“What I speak of is Your Majesty’s honor—how they perceive you. No matter how great an empire Hientry may be, you cannot ignore their opinions.”
Rexus slowly smiled.
“Do they perch above the Emperor’s head?”
Every word dripping with mockery was repulsive. The very situation—being forced to converse with such a man—was utterly deplorable. Renisha gave a soft, derisive laugh.
“Then do as you please. Strike down Cassius before their eyes and ruin me. They’ll rejoice. With a civil war erupting in delectable Hientry, every dog and ox will covet our borders. But consider the opposite: if you settle this here and now, they’ll direct all their arrows at Canaria.”
