Renisha had a little guest who visited her every night. Humming a tune, Renisha smiled as she leaned against the sofa. Cassius would arrive soon.

She often fell into the illusion that everything would be alright if she gently stroked Cassius’s small body with her fingers.

Soon, the festival to bless the Three Serpent Gods would begin. Only three days remained—just three days. News had been arriving that the Death Envoys were steadily reaching the harbor.

Renisha slowly blinked her eyes.

At the festival banquet, Renisha had planned to sit beside Rexus.

How would Cassius feel about that?

A sharp thought rose from deep within her heart.

Would he be hurt? Or would he pretend not to care? Or perhaps he’d burn with jealousy toward Rexus? She didn’t know what reaction he’d show, but anticipation welled up inside her. Renisha ran her tongue over her lips.

She rose from her seat. A warmth blooming from within her belly enveloped Renisha. As she pushed open the balcony door, the wind curled around her.

The door opened first. Renisha reflexively turned her head. It was a voice she especially didn’t want to hear at this hour.

Rexus stood at the doorway, his face flushed with drink. His unfocused eyes clearly showed he’d taken some kind of drug as well. Behind him stood Haelin, pale as a ghost.

No one could have stopped Rexus.

Staggering, Rexus approached Renisha. Renisha stared at him with a cold, hardened expression. So that’s why it had been so quiet—she finally felt the reality of being back in the Imperial Palace.
