Sophie suggested it would be better to eat breakfast first, as it was still early. Though impatient, Vivian followed her advice. She washed, ate breakfast, and changed her clothes. Sophie even made sure to neatly arrange her hair.
Upon hearing that Edwin was practicing shooting in the forest, she headed straight toward that very wood—the place where nightmares from the past haunted her.
From afar, the booming gunshot echoed through the sky like thunder. The instant she pictured facing him with a gun in hand, an intuition flashed through her—that the barrel would surely be aimed at her. Yet even imagining it, she felt no tremor at all. She envisioned him pulling the trigger without hesitation, his eyes coldly clear as ice—but no fear, no sorrow arose within her.
Somewhere deep in her heart, it felt hollow, as if a part of her had been gouged out.
In the distance, Edwin’s back came into view. He took steady aim at a flying target, fired—and the disk shattered midair.
The servant operating the flinger froze at Vivian’s sudden appearance. Edwin’s gaze immediately shifted to her.
They simply stood there, staring silently at each other. The cold wind blowing from afar pushed against their backs, yet it couldn’t narrow the distance between them. Vivian’s eyes fell upon the barrel of the gun he held.
“Everyone, leave.”
Edwin issued a curt order and placed his gun on the makeshift table. In the desolate forest, only Edwin and Vivian remained.
“What brings you all the way here?”
“I came to get your final answer on how you’ll handle Charlotte’s situation.”
Edwin let out a short laugh.
“I thought maybe you’d come back for the receipt you forgot to take yesterday. After all, meticulous Miss Ebelline has just parted with something rather precious.”
