“Let’s go to Preston in spring.”

He whispered tenderly, pulling her tightly into his arms. Vivian giggled at the warm breath tickling her earlobe and burrowed deeper into his embrace, looking up at him.

His face was blurry—either shrouded in mist or invisible due to failing eyesight.

“We’ll go meet your parents.”

“I’d love that! I can’t wait to meet them. They’ll really like you.”

“And we’ll roll around all day in fields of blooming lavender, eating all your favorite things.”

“Right around the house in Preston, lavender blooms everywhere. I want to show it to you too.”

Excited, Vivian grinned and nestled closer into his arms.

The steady thump-thump of his heartbeat reached her clearly. His breath gently brushing her hair felt real. The warmth and rich scent—everything was vivid.

“So, Vivian.”

“Hmm?”

She lifted her head again at his call. Though she squinted, trying to make out his face through his kind, affectionate voice, his features remained frustratingly indistinct. The more she strained, the more anxious and impatient she became. Even when she touched his cheek, she felt no warmth at her fingertips.

“Wake up.”

“I am awake. Weren’t we just talking?”

The sensation of his lips brushing her forehead, nose, and then her lips soothed her earlier unease.
