Having arrived at the mansion, Edwin skimmed through all the letters and selected one from the pile, tossing it into the glowing embers. The letter, vanishing into the firewood, soon turned into a mere handful of ash.

The afternoon sunlight faded like the bleak autumn wind. The chill breeze swept crisp fallen leaves, deepening the autumnal atmosphere that heralded winter’s approach.

Edwin’s gaze lingered until the letter had completely disappeared.

Slouched slightly, staring only at the fireplace’s embers, Edwin’s expression was unmistakably different from his usual self. Even if no one else noticed, Loic was more than capable of perceiving the profound change in him.

Their bond—forged by witnessing each other’s darkest depths and sealed in secrecy—could not be severed by anything. At least, that was how Edwin was to Loic.
