Edwin stayed with Sera Chadwick until the performance ended. Having forgotten Vivian’s presence, he readily responded to Sera Chadwick’s conversation as they enjoyed the concerto between the orchestra and the cello.

They showed no signs of surprise at meeting Sera Chadwick here by chance, making it clear this encounter had been prearranged. Given that both the Baroness and the Queen herself were personally involved in this marriage discussion, Sera Chadwick was undoubtedly important to Edwin as well.

Yet what Vivian questioned was why he had deliberately brought her along on this date.

Only after the performance ended did he finally acknowledge Vivian’s presence, guiding her out of the theater. Throughout this, Vivian remained expressionless, passively dragged along.

As soon as she boarded the carriage, Vivian immediately pulled open the curtain at the window. The carriage was a cramped two-seater, and her only hope of enduring the stifling space was the brightly rain-drenched night view of Perrington.

With the crack of a whip, the carriage wheels began to roll. Inside the narrow carriage racing through the pouring rain, it was dark, damp, and filled with a suffocating, persistent silence.

It was a stubborn, oppressive silence that neither of them seemed willing to break.

A few days later, there was a royal event. Lady Danvers and Sera Chadwick would surely be attending.

For Vivian, who was worlds apart from Newway’s high society, there was no reason for her to attend. It would be a miracle if she didn’t make a mistake at such a daunting occasion in the royal court.

“I’ll skip the royal event.”

Vivian’s voice shattered the heavy, moisture-laden silence, though her eyes still remained fixed on the rain-blurred night view outside.

“Please let me skip it.”

Her dry gaze flickered toward Edwin’s reflection in the window before shifting back outside. When Edwin gave a soft chuckle and turned his head, her bewildered gray eyes once again settled on his reflection in the glass.

“Why? Are you going to arrange another seat with Miss Chadwick this time too?”

Vivian’s lips pressed tightly shut. Wasn’t it absurd for him to mock her like this? At the Sutton estate’s ballroom, he had immediately danced with Sera Chadwick as if he’d been waiting for her—and made a promise.
