The carriage emblazoned with the Beitnes crest passed through Rottermond’s first drawbridge. The tenants raised both hands and cheered fervently at their lord’s return, and the Beitnes carriage pressed onward through this warm reception, crossing the second drawbridge.

Susanna couldn’t sit still for a moment, tense at the distant sound of hoofbeats echoing from afar. She kept turning to Donnelly again and again, venting her impatience with repeated questions about when they would finally arrive. When the carriage drew so near that she could see its roof over the horizon, she tensed the corners of her mouth and straightened her neck proudly.

As the first carriage halted before Susanna and the servants, the following carriages lined up behind it and stopped one by one in order. When a servant opened the carriage door, Edwin was the first to appear, revealing himself by extending his long leg and planting it firmly on the ground.

Susanna couldn’t hide her joy at seeing her son again after so long.

“Eddie.”

Susanna strode briskly toward Edwin and spread her arms wide in welcome.

“Have you been well, Eddie? Nothing unusual has happened, I hope?”

“Fortunately, everything’s been just the same as always.”

After shooting Edwin a sharp, tingling glare, Susanna cast a stern look toward the two women stepping down from the carriage one after another. Charlotte alighted first, but Susanna’s attention wasn’t on her.

A stunningly beautiful woman, boasting golden hair that shimmered in the sunlight, descended from the carriage with a servant’s support. Soon after, Susanna confirmed the rumored woman accompanying her son—and was utterly stunned.

Susanna involuntarily let out a quiet sigh at the woman’s beauty, so exquisite it could captivate even another woman. She glared once more at Edwin, but like most men, his eyes were fixed solely on the beautiful woman; already, all his attention had been completely stolen by this angelic vision heaven-sent.

Vivian, eyes wide with astonishment, couldn’t help but marvel at the panoramic view of Rottermond Castle. Her gaze, having swept in a circle, met Susanna’s.

Startled, Vivian quickly straightened her posture upon recognizing the Baroness.

“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Baroness. I am Vivian Ebelline.”

Even her voice was soft and affectionate like a nightingale’s song, gentle yet tinged with a delicate charm. Though Susanna felt increasingly conflicted, she concealed it well, gently lifting the corners of her lips into a warm smile.
