Early in the morning, Vivian woke up and had already finished getting ready. Sophie, who had come to open the curtains for her, showed a hint of disappointment upon seeing Vivian already perfectly prepared.

After finishing breakfast and returning to her room, Vivian mentally reviewed what she needed to do today.

First, she would deliver a gift to Charlotte and ask Abernathy about her upcoming tasks—this included ingraining the work into her body so she could perform flawlessly by the time he returned.

Having settled her thoughts, she picked up the gift box and left the room with Sophie. When Vivian said she could go alone, Sophie stubbornly insisted on accompanying her, perhaps still uneasy after the recent incident.

Despite having been hurt by Charlotte’s harsh words, Vivian had bought the gift from the dressmaker’s out of a desire to understand the young girl—after all, a sudden addition to the household could easily feel unwelcome to someone.

When they arrived at Charlotte’s room, Merian’s expression soured upon confirming it was Vivian at the door. Even after reluctantly granting permission from Charlotte, Merian haughtily scoffed and opened the door.

Vivian already felt relieved just by the door opening.

Stepping inside, she met Charlotte’s eyes—Charlotte, who had been reading a book—but immediately looked away again, seeming to refocus on her pages. Vivian sat down opposite her, cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

“You’ve… lost a lot of weight.”

Though Vivian struggled to start a conversation, Charlotte didn’t spare her even a glance.

“I never told Baron Zimmermann about… having someone I love. I was afraid that if he heard such a thing, it might unnecessarily complicate their relationship. From what I saw, Baron Zimmermann seemed like a decent man—certainly suitable as a husband. I finally understood why His Grace chose him as a match for Miss Windler.”

A sharp glare shot toward her like an arrow.

Charlotte’s face flushed red, her breath coming fast. Her flustered, tearful expression pierced Vivian’s heart.

The first love of this delicate young lady was being trampled so cruelly. Vivian’s own heart ached painfully in response to that raw, heartfelt emotion.

“I don’t need your unwanted concern. If that’s why you came here, please leave now.”
