Before Sophie could wake her, Vivian was already sitting on the edge of the bed, endlessly repeating the incantation her father had left behind.

Yesterday, Edwin had ended their conversation by saying he’d understood enough and they’d continue the detailed discussion the next morning—that is, this very morning. Though she hadn’t received a definite answer, judging from his expression and tone, she dared to guess that he was actually enjoying this situation.

Thus, she felt an unfounded confidence that he would gladly accept her request to assign her some work.

Leaning on the single ray of light slipping through the curtains, Vivian scanned the room.

She likely wouldn’t be using this room anymore from today onward. Gone, too, would be the person who would stroke her hair, dress her, bring her meals, and treat her as precious.

She took her first step toward the rock bottom she’d never before experienced—a grueling journey necessary to rise again from that very place.

After spending her last morning in this room, Vivian headed to the study at Edwin’s summons. Standing before the study door, she knocked bravely.

Upon opening the double doors and stepping inside, she found Edwin already seated at his desk. As Vivian took a deep breath and confidently walked forward, his blue eyes pointed toward an unexpected spot.

Pausing in surprise, Vivian followed his gaze and saw a solitary empty chair placed conspicuously apart from the desk.

Vivian’s plan had been to sit right before him, greet him good morning, then earnestly present her willingness to do chores in the mansion, share her slightly embarrassing resolve, and declare her determination to repay her debt. With that plan suddenly foiled, she couldn’t hide her bewilderment.

“What are you doing?”

“Huh?”

“Go sit down.”

Still confused and flustered, she obediently sat in the chair he’d indicated. From her seat, the entire study came clearly into view.
