The spring rain that began the next morning continued into the afternoon. The drizzling spring rain carried the rich scent of fresh grass. The refreshing fragrance of new leaves mingled with the damp air, gathering peace and drifting into Vivian’s room.

Leaning out the wide-open window, she looked up at the sky. Cool raindrops pattering onto her cheeks tickled her skin.

She climbed onto the windowsill and reached her hand outside. A small puddle gathered in the hollow of her palm. Vivian kept her hand outstretched until the water overflowed and trickled down, then lifted her gaze toward the overcast sky.

Judging by the thickness of the dark clouds, the rain showed no sign of stopping—even after collecting rainwater dozens of times.

A soft breeze, heavy with rain, blew in. The damp wind tousled Vivian’s short golden hair as it brushed against her face.

This breeze carried a scent both unfamiliar and yet strangely familiar—the same scent from fifteen years ago, the day she first met Sayer Raven.

Nothing left as vivid a memory as a certain smell. Naturally, Vivian was drawn back to that day.

The spring rain, though gentle, turned biting due to the chillier weather compared to today; without tightly wrapping her shawl, the cold snapped sharply. Yet, because she had insisted—nearly thrown a tantrum—to visit a relative on her own, her mother had let her go alone for the short journey.

It was on that bitterly cold day that she met Sayer Raven.

“Miss Ebelline, it wasn’t cold that day—it was hot.”

But recalling the temperature of that day, Edwin thought differently.

He supposed that made sense. To Edwin, who had been on the run back then, it might indeed have felt unbearably hot.

Now, it was nothing but a lingering afterimage he needed to erase completely. He had to break free from those clinging memories and release his guilt.
