Edwin, who had entered the palace interior, removed Vivian’s scarf to wipe the blood splattered on his face. Seeing the bloodstains spreading across the fabric, his expression immediately twisted in displeasure.

Edwin considered removing the handkerchief he had been using as a mask, but with no better option available, he simply repositioned it to cover the area beneath his eyes once more.

Mayer’s troops, unable to receive reinforcements, were being easily pushed back. Although Banister’s forces were severely outnumbered, the overwhelming disparity in weaponry—so humiliatingly inadequate—allowed them to dominate the battlefield and seize momentum.

Where could Vivian be?

One element of their plan involved constructing an underground passage beneath Golden Bay Palace that connected to the outside world.

Wellwood, always considering countless contingencies, had a slightly extreme streak. He meticulously prepared fallback plans for every possible failure—including luring enemies into the underground passage to eliminate them.

To the king and his close circle of nobles, this seemed like a perfectly reasonable precautionary measure, allowing the proposal to pass without difficulty, and construction began immediately.

This was just one of many schemes Wellwood had prepared.

Though Mayer’s army appeared to be gradually losing ground at the moment, their numerical superiority soon allowed them to stabilize the frontline once again. Even Count Reed, initially stunned by the violent power of the new weaponry, gradually realized this war was growing increasingly favorable to Mayer.

Yet Count Reed was also a cautious and prudent man. He likely had Mayer and his loyalists stationed near the underground passage as a precaution against unforeseen developments.

Edwin unfolded a map, confirmed the route leading to the underground passage, and headed straight for it.

Vivian’s scarf carried a faint floral scent. Having used it multiple times to wipe Vivian’s face without ever washing it, it was only natural her fragrance remained.
