Outside the window, the dense darkness meant Lawrence’s only reflection on the train window was a worried afterimage of himself. Staring blankly at his meaningless reflection, Lawrence couldn’t shake off an ominous premonition.

A few days ago, Sayer Raven—or rather, Duke Beitnes—had stormed through the mansion and left. It had been an unannounced outing, undertaken only after he became certain Vivian was in Preston. The Duke, who for years had neither left the marquisate grounds nor permitted anyone else to do so, had taken an unexpected step.

Moreover, seemingly convinced Lawrence wouldn’t abandon him, the Duke had sent him off toward Golden Bay on a train with just a single servant accompanying him.

Lawrence had no choice. As long as Vivian remained in the Duke’s grasp, he himself couldn’t escape the Duke’s clutches.

Still, going to Golden Bay meant he could see Vivian. Monica had also wanted to come along for that very reason, but not knowing what awaited them, he couldn’t bring her.

Anxiety and anticipation coexisted. Though the train was clearly moving swiftly, the destination seemed no closer.

He endured the long, tedious hours, fervently praying the deep unease inside him was merely baseless worry.

The last train from Havenbridge arrived in Golden Bay late at night.

Annoyed by the servant’s explanation that he’d have to board another carriage because the distance was considerable, Lawrence muttered a quiet curse.

Climbing into the frustratingly slow carriage, he headed toward the Golden Bay mansion. He tried not to grow anxious as he imagined what his daughter—whom he hadn’t seen in years—might look like now. But as soon as the carriage stopped before the mansion enveloped in darkness, he couldn’t contain himself and kicked the door open roughly.

Crossing the garden shrouded in darkness, Lawrence confirmed it was decorated in pale, ghostly hues.

The Duke had threatened he’d marry Vivian—and it seemed that threat wasn’t an empty one.

Lawrence’s hands instinctively clenched. He worried whether he could restrain himself from punching the Duke the moment they met. He didn’t want to display reckless violence in front of his daughter.

“Vivian! Viv! Father’s here! My daughter!”

Lawrence burst into the mansion, disregarding decorum entirely, and desperately called out for Vivian. His shout echoed through the previously silent mansion, drawing its residents—but his beloved daughter was nowhere to be found.
