Exhausted from unceasing tears, Vivian fell asleep as if collapsing. Had it not been for the sound of the iron door opening, she would have remained asleep for a long time on the cold floor.

Dragged out with her hands bound by rope, spring sunlight poured down the staircase ahead as though God Himself had revealed an escape route. The blinding light, unseen for so long, pierced Vivian’s eyes sharply.

She was so drained of strength that climbing the stairs proved arduous. With her hands tied, she stumbled and fell once before finally receiving support from the guard.

Thus, she faced the world’s spring once more—the warm sunlight, the fragrant scent of spring, the vibrant flowers blooming by the roadside, butterflies fluttering around them, and even the song of larks.

Though these were sights she had always known, today they felt like a special day from a fairy tale.

Yet the moment she spotted the Beitnes family carriage standing far away, that fairy-tale world shattered like a fragile glass bead.

Edwin stepped down from the carriage and gestured toward Vivian with his chin, signaling Loic. When Loic approached and took Vivian from the guard, stubborn Vivian stood her ground with all the strength she had left—but she stood no chance against the stronger man’s force.

The distance between her and Edwin narrowed to barely a step. Their eyes met, yet she quickly averted her gaze from his uncomfortably unreadable stare.

Edwin wrapped his arms around her frail shoulders and helped her into the carriage. She longed to resist fiercely, but lacked even the strength for that—she had exhausted herself completely, her voice gone entirely.

Sitting quietly in the carriage, Vivian gazed listlessly at her dirty shoes. Then Edwin’s hand reached before her eyes and personally untied the rope binding her wrists.

“Remember this: your parents’ safety depends entirely on your attitude.”

The heavy rope dropped limply onto the carriage floor. He was warning her not to run—just because the rope was untied didn’t mean she was free.

Naturally, she lacked even the strength to reply, so for a brief moment she merely stared at her reddened wrists.

With a crack of the whip through the air, the carriage began to move—leaving Harborbridge, where her parents were, and heading back toward Golden Bay. Returning to that very place from which she had so desperately fled.

To attend a wedding she never wanted. To become something that would make this man’s life just a little more entertaining.
