With a gasp that burst forth all at once, her eyes snapped open. The dim air swayed heavily, giving the illusion that she hadn’t yet escaped from a dream. She exhaled an uneven breath and rolled her eyes.

Feeling she needed to sit up to calm her stomach, Vivian clumsily pushed herself upright—only for dizziness and a sharp headache to lance through her brain immediately afterward.

Pressing firmly on her temples, Vivian grimaced.

“You’re awake?”

Her dizzy gaze drifted toward the warm voice carrying a question. He sat at the table reading a book and looked over at her with a gentle smile.

Only after meeting his empty blue eyes did her mind begin to clear, bit by bit.

There was no trace left in the bedroom of last night’s wild, chaotic frenzy—everything was spotless, as if nothing of the sort had ever occurred.
