Fierce sleet swirled through the air, stinging Charlotte’s cheeks. Gideon looked up at the pitch-black sky, bracing himself against Perrington’s cruel cold, clutching a coat, woolen boots, a scarf, and leather gloves as he waited for the heavy iron gate to open.

Soon, with an eerie creak from its hinges, the thick iron gate swung open. The moment he saw Charlotte shuffling out, led by a guard, he let out a sigh of relief.

Charlotte’s vacant eyes stared blankly toward the sky. Watching her stand motionless in place, Gideon had to steel himself against a bitter ache in his chest.

“Charlotte.”

At the sound of his voice, Charlotte’s eyes shifted. When she recognized Gideon, a faint smile appeared on her lips.

Gideon wrapped the scarf around Charlotte’s neck, slipped the leather gloves onto her frozen hands, draped the coat over her stiff shoulders, and pulled the woolen boots onto her scarred feet.

“Are you cold? Let’s go—home.”

Gideon held out his hand. Charlotte hesitated briefly, wondering if it was alright to take it, then slowly reached out and grasped his.

Once they climbed into the carriage, Gideon checked Charlotte’s clothing once more, his expression revealing a determination to leave not even the smallest gap uncovered.

“You’ve really been through so much, Charlotte.”

“…But how was I released? Did the baron use his influence?”

Edwin had intervened earlier, ensuring she received a guilty verdict and a life sentence of hard labor—the punishment for harming Vivian, delivered coldly and decisively.

She had accepted that fate without resistance, believing she would rot in prison for the rest of her life. Then, this morning, a sudden release order arrived, leaving her bewildered.

“No. It was the duke who intervened.”

Had it been Gideon’s doing, Charlotte might have wondered how Edwin had come to yield to him—but before that idle curiosity could take root, Gideon’s answer arrived.
