The Youngest Daughter of the Swordsmanship Family Turned Great Mage - Chapter 26
“Melody!”
Joseph, finally freed from prison, came staggering over.
His legs giving out several times, he hugged Melody, who was just happy to see her brother after so long, and cried.
“Melody, sob, Melody.”
“Elder brother?”
Melody, tightly embracing Joseph’s neck, started crying along with her brother.
“Elder brother, why are you crying?”
“Just, I’m happy to see our Melody after so long.”
“I’m so happy to see you too, elder brother!”
Joseph now grabbed Melody’s shoulders and started examining her carefully up and down.
“Are you hurt anywhere? Did any strange men scare you?”
“I’m not hurt anywhere! The strange men were scary, but I was okay!”
Melody answered brightly, not knowing how worried her brother had been.
“I see, that’s good. Really good…”
Joseph sobbed again. At a signal from Duke Adrian, the maids separated Melody from Joseph.
“Come, young lady. Shall we go have some snacks with us?”
“Really? Are there lots of delicious things?”
“Of course.”
“But what about my elder brother?”
“Your elder brother will come soon. Go ahead and eat first.”
“Okay. Elder brother, I’ll go first!”
Melody waved to Joseph and left the room with the maids.
Duke Adrian quietly explained to Joseph, who was still shedding tears.
“Don’t worry too much. As Melody said, she was quite well.”
“But how… She was clearly taken hostage.”
“It seems Melody has considerable talent for magic. They probably intended to raise her as a magician to use her. That’s why they kept Melody alive even until now when things have gone awry.”
Joseph blinked for a moment, not understanding, then belatedly grasped the situation and clenched his fists.
“So they were trying to use our Melody after me. And I didn’t even know…!”
“Still, it’s fortunate. Thanks to that, Melody was able to be safe.”
“…”
“As I said earlier, we’ll keep Melody in our Adrian family. If you do well, I plan to sponsor Melody and raise her as a magician. Cellinne has already agreed to teach Melody.”
Not just anyone could learn magic. Especially commoners. So even those with talent often couldn’t learn magic properly and let it go to waste.
But to receive lessons directly from the Adrian family’s magician? This could be called a family honor.
Joseph, who had been dazed, soon understood the duke’s meaning and prostrated himself at his feet.
“Thank you, Your Grace. Thank you so much.”
“This time too, give your thanks to Rozette. It was her choice.”
“The young lady…”
Joseph sprang to his feet.
“May I go see the young lady?”
“Yes.”
“Thank you. Then I’ll come back later to greet you again.”
Joseph ran inside, still staggering slightly. Duke Adrian watched him go, then headed to his office.
He intended to wrap up all matters now.
[This is the timeline separator]Melody’s eyes widened at the sight of the fancy snacks she had never seen before.
“Can I really eat these?”
Joanne answered with a smile.
“Of course.”
When Melody still hesitated, Rozette, sitting across from her, placed a checkered cookie in the child’s hand.
She was imitating what Lucas had once done for her when she hesitated in front of a grand breakfast spread.
Melody’s eyes lit up as she hesitantly put the cookie in her mouth. Rozette carefully asked.
“Is it delicious?”
“Uh-huh.”
With that as a start, Melody began eagerly eating the snacks. Rozette, munching on snacks along with her, gathered courage to continue introducing themselves.
“How old are you?”
“Me? Eight years old! You?”
“I’m eight too.”
“We’re friends then?”
“Friends?”
Rozette blinked her eyes blankly.
“We’re the same age, so we’re friends. Why? Don’t you like it?”
It wasn’t that she disliked it. Just, the expression ‘friends’ felt a bit unfamiliar.
Of course, she had friends her age when she was at the orphanage.
But somehow the word ‘friend’ used to describe the children she was close with then felt slightly different from the ‘friend’ describing Melody and herself.
‘It’s not bad.’
Rather, it could be said she felt good about it. Rozette felt her chest bubbling slightly as she shuffled her feet.
“From now on, we’ll both learn magic from Elder Sister Cellinne, so let’s get along well.”
“Okay!”
Joanne, listening to the two children’s chat, hesitated for a moment.
Strictly speaking, Rozette, a child of the ducal family, and Melody, a commoner, couldn’t be friends.
But since Rozette liked it, she decided to leave it be for now.
‘If Melody becomes a magician later, she might receive a knighthood or noble title, so it would be nice if she really becomes friends with the young lady.’
That’s what she thought.
Just then, there was a calm knock, and Joseph Oser entered.
“Elder brother!”
Melody jumped down from the sofa and ran over. Joseph lifted Melody up.
“Elder brother, try this! It’s super delicious!”
“Our Melody, were you eating snacks?”
“Yes!”
“But I have something to say to the young lady, can you get down for a moment?”
“Okay!”
Joseph set Melody down and approached Rozette, kneeling on one knee.
“Thank you, young lady. Thanks to you, I was able to save Melody.”
“That’s because you changed your mind.”
“Still, if it weren’t for you, His Grace wouldn’t be safe, and we wouldn’t have found Melody.”
“…”
Joseph placed his right fist on his left chest, observing knightly etiquette.
Strictly speaking, Joseph, still an apprentice knight, couldn’t take this action, but Rozette didn’t point it out and watched him do it.
“I haven’t received my knighthood yet, so I can’t make a knight’s oath. But I can promise you this one thing. From now on, I will live for you, young lady.”
“For me?”
“Yes. My life is only for you, young lady. When I formally receive my knighthood, I will make a knight’s oath to you.”
He gauged Rozette’s reaction as she remained silent.
“Will you accept it?”
Melody, who had been watching, quietly approached and knelt on one knee in front of Rozette, following her brother.
Rozette looked at the two pairs of blue eyes gazing at her, then nodded.
“Okay.”
“Thank you, young lady!”
“Thank you!”
The three smiled brightly at each other.
The three didn’t yet know that it would take only a year for Joseph Oser to formally make his knight’s oath to Rozette.
[This is the timeline separator]“There’s no connection. Is this really all?”
Duke Adrian, putting down the report, pressed his eyes firmly. His aide bowed his head apologetically.
“We searched as much as possible, but… I’m sorry.”
Viscount Shane, who orchestrated this incident, was someone who had been dissatisfied with the proposal Duke Adrian had presented to the emperor half a year ago.
He probably thought that if only Duke Adrian were gone, that proposal would pass, and thus planned to eliminate him.
This was the superficial reason that had been revealed so far.
However, hardly anyone believed this fact.
Duke Adrian clearly thought there must be someone behind Viscount Shane. So he mobilized all of the Adrian family’s intelligence to uncover Viscount Shane’s backer.
But nothing was revealed.
“Shane isn’t the type to make such a meticulous plan. Two spies planted in Adrian by Shane family’s intelligence? Nonsense.”
“I’ll look into it more.”
After the aide left, Duke Adrian opened his eyes.
He mulled over what his eldest son, Daniel, had said just earlier.
−Father, actually, Rose has been saying strange things for a while.
−What did she say?
−She told me to be careful when riding in carriages.
−Carriages?
−Yes. In the end, it was you who had the carriage accident, Father, but I’m telling you because I can’t just ignore Rose’s words.
Daniel also said this:
−Also, His Highness Joshua said something similar…
−The prince did?
−Yes. He said to be careful of carriage accidents. More precisely, His Highness Joshua spoke first, but the timing was similar.
Joshua and Rozette both warned about carriages, and specifically told Daniel to be careful, around the same time.
It was certainly an odd occurrence.
So after parting with Daniel, Duke Adrian met Joseph Oser and asked, just in case:
−Was their target not just me, but Daniel as well?
However, Joseph’s answer was ‘no.’ He said without a moment’s hesitation that the nameless opponent had targeted specifically Duke Adrian.
The targets were different, but a carriage accident definitely occurred.
Duke Adrian couldn’t just overlook this point. He tapped his fingers on the desk, then stood up to meet his beloved youngest daughter.
[This is the timeline separator]When Duke Adrian visited Rozette’s room, she was still in conversation with Melody.
“Rose.”
Melody, who had been chattering away in front of Rozette, stiffened.
“Miss Melody, shall we go see your brother?”
The quick-witted Joanne took Melody outside.
The only ones left in the room were Rozette and Duke Adrian.
‘What is he going to say?’
Rozette tensed a little, seeing the duke’s face subtly different from usual.
Clearly, everything had ended well, but the duke still seemed to have something to say.
Sure enough, the duke, sitting across from her, asked gently:
“Rose, I heard you said something to Daniel before.”
“What did I say?”
Though she had an idea, she pretended not to know for now.
“I heard you told Daniel to be careful when riding in carriages.”
She knew a day like this would come eventually. Rozette calmly gave the answer she had prepared in advance.
“When I was in the village, I heard a lot about carriage accidents. That’s why.”
“Why did you say such a thing only to Daniel? Weren’t you worried about Dad, Isabel, or Lucas?”
Rozette shook her head vigorously.
“I was worried.”
“Then why?”
“Elder Sister Isabel and Elder Brother Lucas don’t ride carriages much. So I wasn’t too worried about them.”
“Then what about Dad?”
The duke asking like this looked a bit hurt.
“Dad is…!”
Rozette hesitated, then spread her arms wide and smiled brightly.
“Dad is the strongest Sword Master in the world!”
Implying there was no need to worry.

Wasn’t the male lead described as a cold and otherworldly figure in the book?

Short scene 2:
Wei Jing Mo stared intently at Feng Bai Su who was about to go out, wanting to say, “Be careful on the road.”
Before he could speak, Feng Bai Su suddenly bent down and bit his cheek.
Her peach blossom eyes were full of disdain: “Tsk! You’re so clingy!”
Wei Jing Mo: “…”
